X3 Holds More
BMW lists 31.5 cu. ft. behind the rear seats and 67.1 cu. ft. folded, versus 22.4 and 63.3 cu. ft. for the XC60. If you regularly carry strollers or hockey bags, test both with your actual gear.
The 2026 Volvo XC60 B5 Core and 2026 BMW X3 30 xDrive are closely matched: both are five-seat, all-wheel-drive SUVs with turbocharged 2.0-liter mild-hybrid engines and eight-speed automatics. The XC60 starts lower and is shorter for easier parking. The X3 has more power, better EPA fuel economy, more cargo space, and a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award.
Choose the XC60 if you want the lower starting price, a more compact footprint, Google built-in infotainment, and the option of a plug-in hybrid. Choose the X3 if fuel economy, cargo space, acceleration, and included maintenance are your top priorities.
The XC60 B5 Core pairs a 247-hp turbocharged four-cylinder with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The X3 30 xDrive uses a similar setup: a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 48-volt mild-hybrid assist, rated at 255 hp. A mild hybrid uses a small electric motor to assist the engine and smooth stop/start operation; neither SUV needs to be plugged in.

EPA estimates are for comparison; actual mileage varies. Cargo figures are manufacturer-reported and measurement methods differ between brands. Volvo's published 0-60 time is for the XC60 B5 currently listed on its U.S. site; BMW's figure is a manufacturer estimate.
For pure fuel economy, the X3 is ahead. For tight city parking and price, the XC60 has the edge.
Fuel costs: The X3's 29 mpg combined beats the XC60's 26 mpg. Over a long daily highway commute, that difference adds up. The XC60's larger 18.8-gallon tank partly offsets it by extending the distance between fill-ups.
Parking and maneuvering: The XC60 is 1.8 inches shorter, a small but real help in parking garages and on narrow streets in Plymouth, Boston, and older South Shore towns.
Highway assistance: Stepping up to the XC60 Plus adds Pilot Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with lane centering. See what each Volvo trim includes in our current Volvo trim levels guide.

The XC60 offers optional integrated rear booster cushions on every trim, which fold out of the seat cushion for older children. ISOFIX child-seat anchors are standard.
The X3 30 xDrive is rated to tow up to 4,001 lbs. The XC60 is rated for 3,500 lbs., enough for many small boats, campers, and utility trailers.
IIHS: The 2026 BMW X3 earned a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+. The 2026 XC60 does not hold a 2026 IIHS award; its current ratings, carried over from tests of a 2023 XC60 B5, are Good in the small overlap and updated moderate overlap front tests and Acceptable in the updated side test.
NHTSA: NHTSA gives the XC60 a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating, with 5 stars in frontal and side crash tests and 4 stars for rollover resistance.
Maintenance: BMW includes scheduled maintenance for 3 years or 36,000 miles. For 2026 gas-powered models, Volvo covers the first two scheduled services within 2 years or 20,000 miles. Both carry a 4-year/50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty.
