Read the CARFAX report closely
- Accident history and the areas of the car affected
- Number of owners and where the car was registered
- Service records, including completed recalls and software campaigns
- Any branded title, such as flood or salvage
Before you buy a Certified by Volvo electric vehicle, confirm five things: what the certification covers, the vehicle’s history, which charging equipment comes with it, whether its software is current, and how much factory coverage remains, especially on the high-voltage battery. Certified by Volvo vehicles must have fewer than 80,000 miles, pass a 170+ point inspection, and come with a 12-month, unlimited-mile Certified limited warranty. Any remaining 8-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery warranty continues with the car.
Certification answers the general quality questions. An electric vehicle adds a few more that you should ask about the specific car.
Every Certified by Volvo vehicle, including fully electric and plug-in hybrid models, goes through a 170+ point inspection by a Volvo technician, a road test, and reconditioning with genuine Volvo parts. It also comes with a CARFAX Vehicle History Report with the CARFAX Buyback Guarantee.
What certification does not tell you on its own is how much of the high-voltage battery warranty remains, what charging equipment is included, whether the latest software is installed, and how the car’s current range compares with your daily driving. Those are the questions this guide helps you ask.
These terms come from Volvo Car USA’s Certified by Volvo program page.
| Program element | What Volvo Car USA states | Why it matters for an EV |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Fewer than 80,000 miles; only an Authorized Volvo Dealer can certify a vehicle. | Sets a mileage ceiling on the battery and drive components. |
| Inspection | 170+ points, including tire tread depth checked in 12 places, key safety systems, and driver-assistance features such as Pilot Assist and BLIS; plus a road test. | Covers the whole vehicle. Ask separately about battery-specific checks (see below). |
| Certified limited warranty | 12 months/unlimited miles, starting after the 4-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle Basic Warranty expires or 12 months from your Certified purchase date, whichever occurs later. | Adds coverage beyond the original factory warranty. |
| High-voltage battery | New fully electric and plug-in hybrid Volvos carry an 8-year/100,000-mile (whichever comes first) battery warranty; remaining coverage continues when the car is sold as Certified by Volvo. | The most important coverage on an EV. Remaining time depends on the in-service date and mileage. |
| Deductible and transfer | $0 deductible for warranty visits; warranty is transferable to subsequent owners at no cost. | Supports resale value. |
| Extended protection | Protection plans available for up to 5 additional years and up to unlimited miles; coverage levels depend on age, mileage, and model. | Consider if you plan to keep the car past its factory coverage. |
| Roadside assistance | Volvo Roadside Assistance Plus, 24/7; Certified vehicles include complimentary Roadside Assistance for 5 years from the new-vehicle warranty start date. | Includes towing to a Volvo retailer if the car cannot be driven. |
| Vehicle history | Complimentary CARFAX Vehicle History Report with Buyback Guarantee. | Flags branded titles such as flood damage, which matters for high-voltage components. |

How much remains depends on the car’s original in-service date and mileage.

Volvo’s published inspection description covers exterior, interior, powertrain, safety systems, and driver-assistance features, and states that electrified vehicles go through the same 170+ point inspection.
