Charging vs. gas stations
The EX30 works best with overnight home charging; a Level 2 charger refills it in about 8 hours. The XC40 refuels in minutes at any gas station and needs no charging equipment. Learn about charging your Volvo.
Choose the fully electric 2026 Volvo EX30 if you can charge at home, want the quickest and easiest-to-park option, and would use a $3,500 Massachusetts MOR-EV rebate. Choose the mild-hybrid 2026 Volvo XC40 if you need more rear-seat and cargo space, want to refuel at any gas station without planning charging, or tow up to 3,500 pounds. Their starting prices are within about $1,000 of each other.
It comes down to where you refuel and how much space you need.
The Volvo EX30 is Volvo’s smallest fully electric SUV. It runs only on battery power, with up to 261 miles of EPA-estimated range in Single Motor form, and needs to be charged at home or at public stations. It is shorter than the XC40 and quicker, reaching 60 mph in as little as 3.4 seconds with the Twin Motor.
The Volvo XC40 is a compact SUV powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter gas engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The mild hybrid assists the engine and recovers braking energy, but it cannot be plugged in or driven on electricity alone. You refuel it like any gas car. It offers more rear legroom and roughly double the maximum cargo space of the EX30.

Electric motors deliver strong acceleration from a stop, which is why the EX30 is quicker in both versions. The XC40’s mild hybrid system smooths the gas engine and helps efficiency but does not drive the car on electricity alone.
EV range drops in cold weather, so size the EX30’s range to your longest winter round trip. Both offer all-wheel drive. Winter traction also depends on tires and driving; see our seasonal tire guide.
